Program Description:

Race, Class, & Gender in Mexico: A Historical Perspective

Mexico City, Mexico

This program will examine the diversity of cultures that emerged before and after independence was won – cultures rooted in indigenous Mexico, Africa, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.  It will focus on the role of race, class, and gender in the formation of the Mexican Nation since the 1810 revolutionary war for independence.  The program will end with a critical analysis of the 1910 Revolution and the role of artists in the post-revolutionary period and present day Mexico.  There will be tours and excursions to the museums, theatres, and historic sites within Mexico City that will include the National Museum of Anthropology, Frida Kahlo's House and Museum, Diego Rivera's museum, the National Palace and pyramids in the city's historic center, and the Chapultepec Castle. There will be a one day excursion to the famous Teotihuacan Pyramids and other historic cities outside of Mexico City.
