Program Description:

Irish Theater: Origins and the Contemporary Scene

Dublin, Ireland

Today, Irish theatre is at an unprecedented level of popularity as measured by the number of international tours, productions, and translations of plays worldwide in recent years. Within the Republic and North, established playwrights and new artists are continually creating work with a global impact.  In the early 20th century, W.B. Yeats' and Lady Gregory's Abbey Theatre set the standard for the aspirations of national(ist) theatres around the world as Ireland began producing a lineage of playwrights whose work is celebrated throughout the world.  Despite huge social and cultural changes in the last 15 years, early 21st century Ireland stands poised to continue expanding the scope and influence of this body of work.

This study abroad program takes advantage of Ireland's rich theatre, literary and historical culture by engaging students in the study and practice of Irish theatre from historical and contemporary contexts.  Students will attend two courses: "Modern and Contemporary Irish Theatre: Culture, Context, Critique" (Charlotte McIvor) and "Applied Acting Techniques" (Christine Nicholson).

Students will attend 10 plays at theaters such as the Abbey, the Peacock, Project Arts Center, the Gate and Druid as well as participate in visits to numerous historical and cultural sites including the Cork Midsummer Festival, Dublin Writer's Museum and major sites associated with the Irish struggle for independence.

We will also welcome prominent theatre artists into our classroom for talkbacks and group workshops including Druid Theatre's Casting Director, Maureen Hughes, Barabbas's artistic director, performer and clowning expert Raymond Keane, Irish Modern Dance Theatre's John Scott, and the co-artistic directors of the internationally acclaimed Brokentalkers, Gary Keegan and Feidlim Cannon.  In addition, we will host panel discussions with professionals working in technical design and theatre management and dance.
